Ode to Patron Artemis

Artemis—the patron of young women and the fierce protector of the vulnerable—is a powerful symbol of fierce independence. She claimed dominion over untamed mountains and forests, forgoing the confines of civilized cities. The goddess is traditionally depicted wearing a short tunic and hunting boots, attire that granted her complete freedom of movement. Artemis is frequently accompanied by a retinue of dogs, deer, and other wild animals. In his Hymn to Artemis, the poet Callimachus tells us that Artemis' woodland dances were so joyful that Helios, the sun god, was compelled to pause his chariot in the sky to watch her graceful movements, thereby elongating the days of summer.
