Ode to Sacred Arethusa Necklace Set
Fiercely independent, the nymph Arethusa reveled in the wild freedom of her native woods and streams. When the river god Alpheus relentlessly pursued her, she cried out to the goddess Artemis for help. In a watery metamorphosis, Artemis shrouded Arethusa in a mist and transformed her into a pure freshwater spring. Her waters traveled on a subterranean journey, flowing beneath the sea to finally emerge in Sicily. The Greeks once honored this sacred escape by dedicating springs across the land. The image of Arethusa—her hair crowned with an olive wreath, dolphins circling her form—came to symbolize her deep-seated joy in nature, her unyielding desire for freedom, and the miraculous fluidity of her escape.
This story of Arethusa is depicted in the “Sacred Arethusa” necklace set, which features the coin of Arethusa wearing an olive crown and surrounded by dolphins. The aquamarine pendant is a symbol of Arethusa’s metamorphosis into a freely flowing watery form.
